Lobaton, Murphy Lead Nats Past Dodgers To Tie Series

Oct 10, 2016 3:57 PM

Leave it to light-hitting Jose Lobaton to change the complexion of the Nationals' NL Division Series with one big swing.

Getting a rare chance to play because of starting catcher Wilson Ramos' late-September injury, backup Lobaton hit a three-run homer through a strong wind to erase an early deficit Sunday. Daniel Murphy provided more-expected production with two RBI, and Washington's bullpen threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, leading the Nationals past the Dodgers 5-2 in a rain-postponed Game 2 to even the series at 1-all.

Blue Jays Sweep Rangers, Advance To ALCS

Oct 10, 2016 3:56 PM

There were no questions from the Toronto crowd, but there was plenty of back-and-forth between the Blue Jays and Rangers Sunday night. While many were busy watching the presidential debate in the United States, up here in Canada, Texas took an early lead in the first inning, the Blue Jays quickly went ahead and then padded their lead with home runs. Then the Ranger crawled back and re-took the lead in the sixth only to have Toronto tie it back up right away.

In the end, the Blue Jays won on what could have been an inning-ending double play in the tenth inning when Rougned Odor made a wide throw to first. That allowed Josh Donaldson to score to give Toronto a 7-6 win to sweep the series and give their fans another thing to celebrate on Canadian Thanksgiving Monday.

Bumgarner, Gillaspie Lead Giants Past Mets, Advance To NLDS

Oct 6, 2016 5:05 PM

Madison Bumgarner was able to beat the New York Mets, who got pure dominance from their starting pitcher, Noah Syndergaard, because he outlasted him. Bumgarner added to his reputation as one of the toughest postseason pitchers in baseball history by pitching a complete-game shutout to beat the Mets 3-0 in the National League wild-card game at Citi Field.

In the end, Terrry  Collins' best reliever let him down. Conor Gillaspie hit a three-run home run off Mets closer Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning.

Edwin Encarnacion's Walk-Off Home Run Sends Blue Jays To ALDS

Oct 5, 2016 4:00 PM

With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 11th inning on Tuesday night, Edwin Encarnacion hit a walk-off, three-run home run to send the Toronto Blue Jays past the Baltimore Orioles and into the ALDS.

It was the Blue Jays' first postseason walk-off home run since Joe Carter won the 1993 World Series.

"You can't say enough about him. He's been the one guy throughout the whole year who's been in the lineup and healthy," Kevin Pillar said. "He's carried the team this whole year, and he doesn't get enough credit for what he does. This guy should be in the MVP conversation. He plays a hell of a first base and doesn't get enough recognition for that.

"What he's been able to do with everything he's got going on with his free agency, and being able to put that behind him and just go out there and play and drive in runs -- we've got one of the best hitters in the game, and we've all learned so much from him."

Encarnacion hit 42 home runs this season and has averaged 39 homers and 110 RBIs in the past five.

The Blue Jays will face the Texas Rangers in the ALDS beginning Thursday.
